The Supreme Court has ordered that “urgent measures” be taken in order to stop the drug trafficking problem in northern Argentina.

Ricardo Lorenzetti, Elena Highton de Nolasco, Carlos Fayt, Enrique Petracchi, Juan Carlos Maqueda, Carmen Argibay, and Raúl Zaffaroni unanimously signed the petition for immediate action to be taken to combat the problem.

The statement comes days after the church expressed its concern over the worrying growth of drug trafficking in the country.

The court demanded the Magistrates Council and the Ministers of Justice, Human Rights, and Security to put measures into place, suggested by judges from the north of the country, to combat the “serious problem of drug trafficking”.

The president of the Court, Ricardo Lorenzetti, chaired a meeting on 18th September with government officials and provincial magistrates from northern Argentina, the zone most affected by the trafficking of illegal substances.

As a result of this meeting the tribunal received a report on 24th October detailing the scale of the problem in the Salta-Jujuy region. The following day the tribunal received a report for the Tucumán region.

Various other sectors have expressed grave concern with the issue in the last few days, above all as a result of the tens of deaths and threats against the governor in Rosario.

Security Secretary, Sergio Berni, defended the current measures in place against drug trafficking, stating, “It is efficient”, and that the borders “are well looked after”.

In recent days, various members of the opposition party have pushed the government to strengthen the control measures in force at borders and improve radar systems.
